The GG1 Revealed: The Complete History of the Iconic Locomotive's Development

After 80 years, what more can be said about the Pennsylvania Railroad’s iconic GG1 locomotive? Surprisingly plenty!

A masterpiece of 1930s streamlining, the GG1 locomotive’s history as it has developed over the passing decades has focused primarily on its impressive power, longevity of service, and its important role in the electrification of the Northeast Corridor. Yet, missing from its history is the behind-the-scenes story of the many twists and turns that encompassed its masterful development.

The GG1 Revealed, the first comprehensive look at the locomotive’s engineering and aesthetic design evolution, covers the time from its conception until the first production units began rolling down the tracks. The resulting story challenges many long-held beliefs about the locomotive’s history—especially in regards to the contribution of world famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy—as well as provides greater understanding of the role of those who contributed to its success.
